Artists’ Books 2016: 10 of the year’s best, from performative publishing to fascinating flies

 

Sarah Bodman, senior research fellow at UWE Bristol’s Centre for Fine Print Research and writer of a-n’s Artists’ Books series, picks her ten favourite publications of the year.

Laura Rosser is an amazing printmaker (she recently won the neo:printprize for her large-scale woodcut, GD1 Kanazawa). She’s a dab hand at typing, too. Her practice is socially-engaged, encouraging her audience to embrace the tactile imperfections of the hand-typed and not be afraid to join in themselves. She runs typing pool events and spelling bees to celebrate works created by typewriters and other analogue processes where there is no autocorrect. I love this new edition from her larger body of work, Type ’n’ Tweet. These hand-typed sheets folded into bird-shaped books carry droll little messages such as, ‘When I was 8 I typed rude words’; ‘I am not painting my kitchen yellow’; and ‘I suck at using a typewriter’…
