Hotwire~ Solar Dust & Vibration Workshop

May 18, 2025

Following the co-writing of a paper with Andrew Prior and David Strang for the Media Art History conference, Laura attended a workshop led by both artists at 37 Looe Street in Plymouth. She brought along her Fisher Price record player, Silver Reed 100 typewriter, and dot matrix printer dust as materials for the session. Below is some information about their excellent ongoing workshop project:

Hotwire~ is an open, collaborative system without hierarchy, inviting anyone to contribute, replicate, and share skills, ideas, and perspectives on art, technology, more-than-human advocacy, and the art of living on a damaged planet. Since its launch in 2009 by Andrew Prior and David Strang—Associate Professor of Digital Media Arts at XJTLU—it has continued to evolve through the contributions of a growing network of practitioners. We’d be really interested to get your input on how that resource could be helpful, transformative etc. (both in the workshop and the week beyond).

The workshop took place on Wednesday 18th June, exploring the intersection of sound, matter, and low-powered electronics through the construction of unique, tactile sound devices. We’re also keen to explore ways of documenting workshop practices.
